Dr. John C. Malone is Chairman of the Board of Liberty Media Corporation, Liberty Interactive Corporation, Liberty Broadband Corporation and Liberty Global plc. From 1996 to March 1999, when Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) merged with AT&T Corp., he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TCI. Previous to that, from 1973 to 1996, Dr. Malone served as President and Chief Executive Officer of TCI. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Discovery Communications, Inc., Charter Communications, Inc., Expedia, Inc., Liberty Expedia Holdings, Inc. and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. Additionally, Dr. Malone is Chairman Emeritus of the Board for Cable Television Laboratories, Inc.
Born in 1941 in Milford, Connecticut, Dr. Malone was a Phi Beta Kappa and merit scholar at Yale University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Economics in 1963. He also received a Master of Science in Industrial Management from Johns Hopkins in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Operations Research from Johns Hopkins in 1967. He has received two Honorary Degrees for Doctorate of Human Letters; the first from Denver University in 1992 and the second from Johns Hopkins University in 2012.
Dr. Malone began his career in 1963 at Bell Telephone Laboratories/AT&T in economic planning and research and development. In 1968, he joined McKinsey & Company and in 1970 he became Group Vice President at General Instrument Corporation (GI). He was later named President of Jerrold Electronics, a GI subsidiary.
He served as Director of the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) from 1974 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1993. During the 1977-1978 term, Dr. Malone was the NCTA's Treasurer.
In 1983, Dr. Malone received the NCTA Vanguard Award, one of the highest honors in the cable television industry. He has received many other awards and honors which include: TVC Magazine Man of the Year Award - 1981; Wall Street Transcript's Gold Award for the cable industry's best Chief Executive Officer - 1982, 1985, 1986 and 1987; Wall Street Transcript’s Silver Award in 1984 and 1989; Women In Cable's Betsy Magness Fellowship Honoree; University of Pennsylvania Wharton School Sol C. Snider Entrepreneurial Center Award of Merit for Distinguished Entrepreneurship; American Jewish Committee Sherrill C. Corwin Human Relations Award; Communications Technology Magazine Service and Technology Award; Bronze Award - 1993 Financial World CEO of the Year Competition; The Hopkins Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1994 and in 2004 the Hopkins Medal, the school’s highest award. He is also recognized as a Yale Sterling Fellow (Harkness Circle).
Mr. Brett has been a director of Liberty Expedia Holdings, Inc. since November 2016. Mr. Brett has served as Chairman of the Board of General Communication, Inc. since June 2005 and as a director since January 2001. He has been of counsel to Sherman & Howard, L.L.C., a law firm, since January 2001. Prior to that, he served as Senior Executive Vice President for AT&T Broadband from March 1999 to April 2000. He has also served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Tele-Communications, Inc. from 1991 to 1999 and Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of United Artists from 1988 to 1991.
Mr. Engles has been a director of Liberty Expedia Holdings, Inc. since November 2016. Mr. Engles has served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of The WhiteWave Foods Company since October 2012. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer and a director of Dean Foods Company from April 1996 until WhiteWave’s initial public offering in October 2012.
Mr. Hammond has been a director of Liberty Expedia Holdings, Inc. since November 2016. Mr. Hammond has been employed by Friends of the High Line as a Co-founder and Executive Director since October 2015 after serving in those positions from 1999 through December 2013. Before co-founding Friends of the High Line, Mr. Hammond supported the launch of online businesses in the health and travel commerce industries through his experience with: Genesis Direct from 1994 to 1999 where he helped launch, successfully operate and later sell hotel and airline catalogs; Body Health Resources from 1995 to 1996 where he helped develop marketing strategy to launch the Internet’s largest HIV/AIDS information resources, and later served on its board of directors from 1998 to 2008; Watch World International from 1999 to 2000 where he built and managed its e-commerce division; and National Cooperative Bank from 2000 to 2002 where he launched and managed a successful new online subsidiary for the bank.
Mr. Schoelzel has been a director of Liberty Expedia Holdings, Inc. since November 2016. Mr. Schoelzel served as Vice President and Portfolio Manager of the Janus Twenty and Janus Forty Funds from August 1997 through December 2008. Prior to managing the Janus Twenty and Janus Forty Funds, Mr. Schoelzel launched and managed the Janus Olympus Fund from December 1995 to August 1997. Prior to joining Janus in 1994, Mr. Schoelzel served as a research analyst and portfolio manager at Founders Funds, Inc. where he managed the Founders Growth Fund from October 1991 to December 1993.
Mr. Shean has been a director of Liberty Expedia Holdings, Inc. since November 2016. Mr. Shean has served as Senior Vice President of Liberty Media since May 2007, the Chief Financial Officer from November 2011 to October 2016 and the Controller from May 2007 to October 2011. Mr. Shean served as a Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Liberty TripAdvisor from July 2013 to January 2016. He also has served as a Vice President of Liberty Interactive from October 2000 to January 2002, a Senior Vice President since January 2002, the Controller from October 2000 to October 2011 and the Chief Financial Officer from November 2011 to October 2016. He has also served as a Senior Vice President and Chief Financial officer of Liberty Broadband from June 2014 to October 2016.
Mr. Shean has been with Liberty since 2000. Previously, he served in the assurance practice of the accounting firm of KPMG, most recently as a partner. Mr. Shean has served as a director of Expedia since December 2015 and as a director of FTD since December 2014. Mr. Shean previously served as a director of TripAdvisor from February 2013 to December 2015. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he serves on the Department of Accounting and Information Systems advisory board and on the Pamplin College of Business Advisory Council.
Mr. von Furstenberg has been a director of Liberty Expedia Holdings, Inc. since November 2016. He currently serves as Chief Investment Officer of Ranger Global Advisors, LLC, a family office focused on value-based investing (Ranger), which he founded in June 2011. Prior to his tenure with Ranger, Mr. von Furstenberg founded Arrow Capital Management, LLC, a private investment firm focused on global public equities, where he served as Co-Managing Member and Chief Investment Officer since 2003. During the past five years, Mr. von Furstenberg has served as a member of the Board of Directors of IAC/InterActiveCorp, a leading media and Internet company, since 2008 and served as a member of the board of directors of W.P. Stewart & Co. Ltd., a Bermuda based asset management firm through 2013. In addition, Mr. von Furstenberg serves as Co-chairman of the Board of Directors of DVF Studio, LP – a global luxury lifestyle brand. Since 2001, he has acted as Chief Investment Officer of Arrow Investments, Inc., a private investment office which serves his family.
